ABOUT ENGLISH FOXHOUNDS
The English Foxhound originates from Great Britain, and is thought to have been around since c.1600s, however a studbook was not created for the breed until the 1800s. The breed was bred to hunt foxes, hence its name, and there are around 200 active registered foxhound hunting packs in the UK today.
The breed was developed by crossing a variety of hounds with the Bulldog, Greyhound and the Fox Terrier to give it speed, hunting instinct and tenacity during the hunt. The Foxhound has impressive stamina and a good nose, and can run steadily for hours at a time, making some of the English Foxhound's main talents hunting, tracking, guarding and agility. The breed enjoys running and while it isn't as fast as its American cousin, it could run all day with few breaks in between if it so wished. Foxhounds were also bred to be calm and tolerant around horses, and are a friendly breed in general, and because of this and other factors it is one of the choice breeds for foxhunting on horseback.
The English Foxhound was recognized by the AKC in 1909.
